Partly since I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, but also as an educator (Brown University, 1970-75) I have been a student of the liberal arts curriculum first hand (Brown University) and believe that educational programs should incorporate the study of art into other areas of study. That's not a shock coming from an ethnomusicologist who has a MA in 1967 and earned a Ph.D. at UCLA. It is not surprising that the ethnomusicology department of UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is part of the College of Letters and Sciences' department of music. It is possible to pursue many subjects is something I like. I really enjoy teaching undergraduates (majors and non-majors, for whom I have written three textbooks-Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) as well as graduate students. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I focus on primarily teaching with periods when I add administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of the Deans in the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and is now the Chair of the Department of Music again).
